Cat Goddess

Rock of Cashel, County Tipperary

€25

Product Description:

The ‘Cat Goddess’ was found on the Rock of Cashel and was originally classified as a sheela-na-gig but is quite distinct from that tradition. It is a unique example of the diverse imagery in use during the early medieval period. A few cat-like images have been found such as at St. Caitghearn’s church on the Beara Peninsula and Killinaboy in Co. Clare. Cats also feature in mythology such as the mysterious ‘Cave of the Cat’, or Oweynagat, at the ancient Coronation site of Cruachain in Roscommon.

Pen and ink drawing of the Kilinaboy Sheela na GigIllustrated at Bandia
From the Bandia archive
The Sheela Na Gig is a carved stone image of a female figure appearing in Ireland primarily at churches and castles of the Medieval period. She is often placed prominently in a position where observers may see her revealing her genitalia in a gesture of provocative spiritual and sovereign power. She currently appears in 118 representations that are documented in Island of the Sheela na Gigs and new ones are being uncovered all the time.
