Megalithic art

the house of the sídhe

Irish megalithic art dates from the Neolithic, the Late Stone Age, the time when the great monuments such as Newgrange were constructed across the land.

In mythology these mounds were known as the Brú, the house of the Túatha Dé Danann, the mystical spirit people or Sídhe who carved their mysterious messages on the stones over 5,000 years ago.

Sheela na Gig

who is she?

The Sheela na Gig is a carved stone image of a female figure appearing in Ireland primarily at churches and castles of the Medieval period. She is often placed prominently in a position where observers may see her revealing her genitalia in a gesture of provocative spiritual and sovereign power.

She currently appears in 118 representations documented in Island of the Sheela na Gigs, and new ones are being uncovered all the time.

“

Despite the pre-Christian imagery, Sheela na Gigs are traditionally regarded as imbued with mystic powers.
